History

Founding

Aleria began as the humble nation of Aldweivyn, led by the Goddess Alyriana— its main populace was composed of early Humans, Fae, Goblinoids, and some of the more ancient species of Asla'nir, such as Primordials, Draconians, Kaiju, and their ilk. Aldweivyn was a prosperous nation that had a vast economic hold within the world of Asla'nir, for they constructed great war machines, magitech, and literature, although it was split roughly into three territories— Könthro, its centre of government, diplomatic, and military power; Tränerknis, its hub of knowledge, mysticism, and the arts; and Fiáegna, the wildest, farthest regions that were predominantly controlled by the Fae and non-Humanoid races of Aldwivyn. These three states were, of course, split into many more, but these broad regions became home to slightly different cultures and attitudes within them. Alyriana had three children at the time: Damien von Aredhal was almost pureblooded Human, although he was rumoured to have Draconic or even Cambion ancestry by some, and his father was a mighty warrior hailing from Könthro who insisted on teaching the boy how to fight so he could serve as a general for Aldweivyn. Alurea le Chavalier was not regarded quite as positively outside of Tränerknis, as she had Isigkirian blood, with relations to nobility in regions that would currently align with modern day Arkeum, but she was a powerful mage and intelligent scholar. Lilium de Camhaoir, however, was not entirely Human— she was part, or, potentially even entirely Fae, with some suggesting even being an early Elf, and she found her siblings to be vapid and shallow. Around three million years ago, after a series of tumultuous internal conflict, plague, and attacks by various Old Gods, the Goddess Alyriana departed, entrusting her children temporarily to lead whilst she mitigated some of the damage.

For a while, Aldweivyn managed to maintain its stability, but as the days went past and Alyriana did not seem to return, things began to change. With her seeming disappearance, Alyriana's three children eventually came into conflict about how to manage the territories— Damien von Aredhal, supposedly driven mad by mystical forces eventually drew his blade, attacking his half-sisters. Infuriated, Alurea seized control of Tränerknis, and Damien reluctantly enabled her to take control of the region, vowing to take it back by warfare. Lilium and Damien remained on decent terms, however, she spent much of her time in Fiáegna, as, between her feuding half-siblings, the region remained predominantly untouched. As time passed, various cults dedicated to the Goddess N'ghora began to pop up in the region and regions of Aldweivyn had become tainted by her influences, with much of the wilderness becoming overgrown— N'ghora and Alyriana had had a longstanding conflict. With her disappearance, N'ghora seemingly felt the urge to enact some sort of petty vengeance. As part of that, she targeted Alyriana's children, causing Alurea and Damien to go to war— within the sphere of the world tree Balora, however, Lilium had remained unaffected by the madness of her siblings and watched as smoke rose from the battlefields between the other two states. When it became difficult to obtain new recruits, both Damien and Alurea turned to slavery to fuel their warfare and that caused the denizens of Fiáegna and Lilium herself to withdraw from the rest of Aldweivyn to retreat, disgusted with the actions of Alurea and Damien. For withdrawing from Aldweivyn, Damien was infuriated by Lilium, however, with Alurea and her forces providing an effective blockade from the southeast, Damien could not retaliate against them.

The Rise of the Three States

In time, the warfare came to a halt, but the three states remained embittered against one another— they each crowned their new regions with new names and new laws, splitting Aleria apart into three nations. Dimonia, Aluri, and Trium were named after their effective founders and when Alyriana finally returned, she was supposedly so disgusted with her own children that she cursed Damien and Alurea, sparing only Lilium of her wrath. For N'ghora's interference with mortals and longstanding crimes against the other Gods, Alyriana sealed her away with the help of Archon Lennox and although Aleria was free of N'ghora, it lost the favour of its patron Goddess. Still driven mad by N'ghora, Damien and Alurea recognized the potential of keeping slaves and indentured servants and the two nations of Dimonia and Aluri instilled the practice into their governance and economy. They founded monarchies, establishing themselves as their monarchs, and Trium was transformed into a republic, perhaps to spite Dimonians and Alurians, although none are certain. Aleria had always been dominated by Humans, but as the slave trade became increasingly prevalent, the racial diversity of the empire expanded far faster than its culture could adapt, both from voluntary immigration and forced enslavement from other nations.

With increasing sentiments of humanist supremacy, racial tensions spiralled out of control, causing various civil wars and disputes between nations. Dimonia took advantage of this fact— it began to selective breed and experiment on its slaves; forge vast war machines; and expand its militaristic pursuits alongside its economy. Anything that did not bend to its Human leadership was to be enslaved and that which was enslaved was to be used— the most elite members of Dimonian society may be Human, but they frequently assaulted powerful slaves to incorporate their superior physicality and mystic powers into their descendants, enabling them to become unusually potent by the standards of Humans, albeit barbaric for their attrocious actions. Aluri, instead, limited its slavery and oftentimes offered freedom to those who performed their duties admirably, but left them in indentured servitude more often than not. It expanded its libraries and centres of study and magic, enabling Aluri to have a superior form of magitech, as limited as it was over Dimonia. Trium, in contrast, continued to withdraw further into the wilderness, sealing away their cities deep within the most distal reaches of the wilderness— they isolated themselves from Aleria and communed with foreign nations, earning their favour, and thus became a centre of diverse culture, with fine arts, craftsmanship, and literature, with many of Aleria's inhuman races fleeing to Trium. Despite Aluri's best attempts to catch up, Dimonia established itself a world superpower and the constant attacks from Dimonia left Aluri and even Trium in constant destruction, forcing them to constantly be in a state of defence and repair.

The Udoxan-Dimonian War and Alerian Conflict Over the Years

Cocky and overconfident, Damien chose to attack Udoxa— it had recently had a civil war and although Lennox, its Archon, had done Aleria a great favour by assisting Alyriana in sealing away N'ghora, Damien felt that due to their distant relation, he had some distant right to the throne and with N'ghora's whispers lingering within his mind, he felt it fit to punish them for interfering with mortal affairs and working with his mother. He even thought that it was quite possible that Lennox had told her to curse him and, in his madness, he sent his men to the continent of Stellateria, hoping to catch them off-guard. Damien was sorely mistaken, as his forces were decimated and torn apart by the Udoxans— recent civil war or not, Udoxa was more than eager to defend their homelands. The terrible stories of attrition, horrific Eldritch 'monsters,' and devastating artillery came back to Aleria, causing them to forever inappropriately demonise the nation of Udoxa and its peoples. Damien, of course, fell ill from his curse, much like Alurea, and it was one of his last acts as King of Dimonia— Udoxa did not bother pursuing his fleeing forces. The three siblings came to pass down their thrones, either willingly, or, in Damien's case, unwillingly, but the three nations of Aleria continued to hold grudges against one another for their actions in the past— the constant warfare between the three left them embittered towards one another and this warfare would continue throughout Aleria's history. Although the various states of Aleria had been involved with other conflicts, both within and outside of Aleria, the modern era would see them once more fighting amongst themselves with greater intensity than ever before.

Recent History

Victor von Aredhal, a distant descendant of Damien von Aredhal, led various onslaughts against Aluri around two and a half thousand years ago. He was taken by surprise with the Aloernarchian High Queen and Demigoddess, Enyomirak, took advantage of Dimonia's forces being distracted and freed much of Dimonia's war slaves. Adonius, Dimonia's patron God, attacked the God Nethis as they were collecting the dead and was killed in self-defense, resulting in Dimonia losing their God on the battlefield. Crippled, the nation was forced to temporarily withdraw from conflict and had lost the Battle of Neora. Victor von Aredhal died from ailments and his child, Valeria von Aredhal, took the throne. When High Queen Enyomirak returned to Aleria to demand that Valeria free her enslaved people, Valeria obliged, making a bargain with her— one would assume this to have been an error, as Aloernarchian slaves composed much of the slaves used in combat by Dimonia, however, Valeria had other methods of ending the conflicts between the Alerian states. She settled on unification and was contacted by a certain Quinn Devaughn, leader of a terrorist organisation within Trium. Uninformed and uneducated about Trium, Valeria had assumed Quinn and her Saoirse forces to have good intentions— the two teamed up and sought to conquer the rest of Aleria to bring an end to its constant warfare.

Queen Valeria decided to unite the three states into a hegemony, one that maintained considerable individual rule for each nation whilst unifying them under one banner and a set of three rulers, known as Directors. Valeria promised Quinn that she could be the director of Trium if everything went to plan. Valeria managed to foster an uprising within Aluri that demanded for more rights for the commonfolk— distracted and trying to micromanage a brewing civil war, Aluri's monarchy hesitantly signed a surrender agreement to Dimonia, simply wanting to cease the warfare for the time. This rebellion further expanded Aluri's citizens' rights, added a new assembly, and added greater restrictions on slavery, all of which Dimonia encouraged under Valeria's reign. That left Trium— Valeria sent a request for an agreement to her demands whilst camped outside their capital with her forces. Valeria, however, did not expect Quinn to attack Alanor'i regardless of Valeria's wishes— the Saoirse set Alanor'i ablaze alongside the World Tree of Aleria. Trium had no choice but to accept her terms. In retaliation for what had occurred, Valeria had the Saoirse involved executed, although Quinn had died in the crossfire.

Troubled by what had occurred during the warfare and burdened by attempting to unite a shattered nation, Valeria put in a series of reformations that limited slavery whilst attempting to prevent the economy's complete collapse. Valeria reached out to the Fidahnsíolh of Balora, Sadhbh of the Adalgarr Clan, who was able to heal Balora and regrow Alanor'i, as the bulk of its homes were composed of enchanted hollowed trees. After communicating with Enyomirak for a long period of time, Director Valeria chose to abscond her position and ensure the placement of Directors for each Alerian state in an effort to unite with her newfound lover. With Valeria's departure, the Grand Hegemony of Aleria's three Directors managed to maintain its rule and seek to reform the nation to a better state. For two thousand years, Aleria entered a golden era, one in which slavery had been predominantly eliminated and education and welfare were made more available to the general public. These reformations, however, whilst good for Aleria, led to many of its more corrupt politicians to flee to other lands, such as Alnabi, Barasaire, and Tiryt, where they began to take advantage of their wealth and influence to manipulate and control their governments. In spite of that, Aleria began to regain some of its technological advancements, however, around five hundred years ago, this golden era begin to slowly come to a halt.

Alerian leadership had grown more corrupt as time had passed, with many of the old ideals held by Valeria being long forgotten. The first sign that this golden era was coming to an end was the reintroduction of what was, effectively, slavery. In addition to that, Dimonian influences on Tiryt began to worsen, plunging the nation further and further into corruption just as Aleria had, only for Tiryt to splinter off from Aleria. Around three years ago, Aluri decided to take a stand for itself and to seperate from the Union— Trium did not declare backing immediately, but its leadership had considered the matter until Dimonia decided to enforce the Hegemony— in a small, albeit deadly conflict known as the Union War, Dimonia attacked Aluri and attempted to force Aluri to remain in the union. It eventually conceded and surrendered, agreeing to remain in the Union, albeit rather embittered by the matter. Some Alurians blame Trium for not assisting them, however, it has proven that the union that holds Aleria together is an unstable one and so long as corruption continues to fester within its governance, there is no guarantee that Aleria can maintain its union.
