Cambion

From Beyond the Veil

Summary

  • Difficulty To Work With: Intermediate, although it varies from variant to variant. Cambion culture is generally easy to work with and their balancing, whilst it can be difficult with more powerful variants, is generally decently manageable.
  • Permissions: Dwydalze and Nyemir Avbitjak require permission to make, however, all other forms of Cambion do not.
  • Activity: Cambions are nocturnal.
  • Languages: Zalqudox.
  • Major Faiths: Most Cambions worship Arikar, Ki, Nethis, or Ireakh, however, many Udoxan Cambions may worship Abrorik Gods as well.
  • Regions: Cambions are predominantly found within Udoxa, Vasterioth, and Liranon.
  • Courting: Cambions are notably polyamorous and tend to value partners they find intellectually stimulating, those they love, or that equally match their might. Unlike some other polyamorous species, however, Cambions oftentimes do marry, although it is usually after a long relationship.
  • Major Cultural Notes: Although Cambions possess a caste-based society, it is not as stratified or organized as the likes of Celestial society— more powerful Cambions tend to be major figureheads, however, given members of a variant are not inherently constrained to a given role. Cambions are meritocratic and want to see proof of someone's competence and history as a leader before they consider them worthy of their following. Most Cambions outside of Liranon have a strong distaste for Celestials due to their history as slavers and Dimonia's influence on their culture, however, almost all of them recognize that Celestials are not innately evil and that it is a minority that performs these actions.

Ajudak

A Zalqudox word often translated somewhat incorrectly to 'Devil', Ajudak is a general category for many weaker Cambions as a whole— these Cambions are typically referred to as 'Lesser Cambions' as a result. Most Ajudak are the result of Arimajudak intermixing with other Humanoids, such as Humans, Beastfolk, and other Human-kin, however, rarely, some may be Jotunkin or mixed with other races. It should be noted that despite Ajudak being classified as weaker Cambions, hybrids with appropriately more powerful races of variants of Cambion generally get referred to as Arkajudak instead, as most Cambions regard what caste one falls into as a sign of their potency, not as a sign of their ancestry. Ajudak are generally quite humanoid in the sense that many are not particularly 'hyper-adapted' like most other Cambions to the degree where they begin to appear quite inhuman. Almost all Ajudak have wings, but this is not inherently guaranteed, especially in the case of Upeydul and Zuyodul, which tend to rely on their Cambion ancestry to provide said wings and many Arimajudak or even Dwydalze may not even have wings at all. Ajudak generally fill the lower ranks of society and have the least militaristic influences— although many higher-ranking variants of Cambion expect combat excellency and martial prowess out of their children, Ajudak end up fulfilling a wide array of roles in Cambion society and, as such, although higher caste Cambions may choose such career paths, Ajudak have the most diversity in occupation according to the Udoxan and Vasteriothian Censuses.

Zuyodul

The Zuyodul, or rather, the Hyling, are a group of Cambions resulting from the hybridisation of a Cambion with a non-Cambion race or, in many cases, simply the result of Zuyodul continuing to mix with other Zuyodul. Although Zuyodul generally resemble their non-Cambion parent more than their Cambion parent, many still take on aspects of their Cambion relatives— they may feature sets of horns; pointed ears; a pair of leathery wings; a pointed, prehensile tail; vibrant, glowing eyes; and tints of crimson, amber, violet, cobalt, pine, fuchsia, and gold to their skin and hair, but those may be greyscale as well. Given the fact that many Cambions may not even have wings, most Zuyodul generally do not have them as well. Their height and build, naturally, depends upon their parents. Zuyodul usually feature some notable traits depending on the racial variants they are the result of— they may have magmatic and/or bestial features, but this is generally extremely rare. Their magics vary dramatically, however, they most certainly demonstrate skill within Defanatus Sacrum Deum and whatever magics their ancestry offers them, although some form of Elementum Creo, especially Ignis or Glacies, or Umbra et Lux. Zuyodul have a rather interesting place in society due to being the result of hybridisation— the expectation of their parents upon them vary depending on the Cambion and non-Cambion parent they have and thus, Zuyodul are quite diverse and feature an array of cultural perspectives and ideas. As such, although many may be considered lesser by some, many Cambions are also quite willing to listen to what Zuyodul have to say to learn more about other cultures.

Upeydul

Originating from the word 'Upefrej,' meaning 'Impure' as in 'Impure Cambion,' Upeydul has come to be not only a term for a variant of Cambion, but also a term affectionately used for small entities, including children. The first Upeydul, or Implings, to spawn in the world of Asla'nir were the result of smaller or diminutive races intermingling with Cambions— as such, most feature a distant Goblinoid or Fae ancestry. Upeydul, although ranging dramatically in size, are distinguishably smaller than other Cambions, and most stand somewhere between three feet (.9144 metres) to four feet (1.22 metres) high. Most Upeydul vary in appearance, however, most are described as appearing akin to smaller, albeit somewhat more humanoid Voyoronon— they feature crests of horns; pointed ears; a set of undersized, leathery wings; a pointed, prehensile tail; unusually large vibrant, glowing eyes; and generally, feature tints of crimson, amber, violet, cobalt, pine, fuchsia, and gold in their skin colour and/or hair, assuming it is not greyscale already. They may also have more than one set of arms as well as some magmatic and/or bestial features that reflect their Cambion heritage, although this is uncommon. Although physically weaker than most other forms of Cambion, Upeydul are fiercely intelligent and cunning— as such, most are more than capable of compensating for their small size in combat and many take on quite scientific leanings if given the correct education early on. Within the Cambion hierarchy, Upeydul are given a surprising amount of respect— in certain other cultures, many smaller variants are regarded as weaker, but most Cambions regard Upeydul as being equals regardless of their petite stature. Upeydul are known for their capabilities with Defanatus Sacrum Deum and, intriguingly, Ignis Elementum Creo— the phrase 'impfire' comes from the characteristically greenish hue that many Upeydul's fire magic seems to take the form of. It is believed that these flames are capable of inflicting more damage to those of Celestial heritage due to traces of Defanatus within them and can bypass traditional flame resistances through inflicting burns.

Ubi

Supposedly crafted by the Gods Ki and G'hira, Ubi have considerably more Cambion blood and, whilst they generally have non-Cambion ancestry as well, are generally not classified as the result of hybridisation. Their heritage generally is believed to have spawned from the Shinaviraak, but they usually lack the multiple limbs that their relatives are known for. Instead, they inherited the shapeshifting capabilities of the Shinaviraak— Ubi are fantastic shapeshifters who can use Viscus Insero to mimic any roughly flesh-based humanoid entity within their mass and size range; they can also manipulate their vocal cords and sex, but they only develop the latter ability fully in adulthood. Some call feminine Ubi 'Succubi' and masculine Ubi 'Incubi,' however, the two terms have seen a sort of decline in usage, as Ubi are biologically sexfluid. Ubi naturally appear much like other Ajudak due to featuring the same standard Cambion-features in horns, coloured skin, glowing eyes, pointed ears, etcetera, however, are generally distinguished by a few factors: For starters, Ubi naturally have absolutely no bestial nor magmatic traits, however, Ubi are the only Ajudak to naturally feature a spaded tail tip and are always winged, whereas other Ajudak are not guaranteed to be winged at all. Ubi are also unnaturally attractive to the point where they could almost be compared to a G'hira Abomination, but without transforming to any particular sex, Ubi feature no sexual organs nor secondary sexual features, nor do they have them until they reach adulthood; they may also appear somewhat featureless face-wise (unless shapeshifted) depending on whether or not they have any recent non-Ubi ancestry. Ubi are also known for their talent with Umbra et Lux, as they produce extraordinary illusions and their specific talents have led many to work as performers and visual artists. Their most notorious racial ability, however, is their ability to feast on residual Imperial Mentis manas— although they are not as talented with it as the likes of Daiesthai, Ubi can 'feed' upon the affections, emotions, dreams, and thoughts of those around them. It is perfectly harmless, but it generally leaves the affected with a fuzzy sensation whilst soothing their nerves and thus, many Ubi have taken to working in psychiatry, therapy, or hospitality work. It is, however, this ability that results in the so-called nymphomaniac superstitions and myths surrounding them— whilst it is true that many sex workers are Ubi, most Ubi do not rely on sexual contact to perform such an action, nor is it required for them to live.

Arkajudak

Translated roughly as something akin to 'Archdevil,' Arkajudak are Cambions who have some dilution of their Praza-Kwualnin heritage, but are generally classified as true Cambions, as none of them are believed to be the result of direct hybridisation nor recent hybridisation. Arkajudak, or rather, 'Greater Cambions,' are relatively middle of the road as far as the capabilities of Cambions, however, they are generally quite powerful foes regardless. Arkajudak generally have more versatility in magic than Ajudak and are far more physically strong, however, many do not have the ability to fly or only have a few members amongst their populace who can. Arkajudak directly correspond to a specific type of Dwydalze in relation, however, it is not exactly unheard of for any individual Arkajudak to have relations to other types of Dwydalze ancestors. Arkajudak are highly respected within their communities for their potency, and although they are somewhat uncommon, they are certainly more common than their Dwydalze relatives. That being said, although Arkajudak formally refers to three specific variants of Cambion, these variants vary dramatically in appearance and are more grouped by ancestry, physicality, and magic; likewise, Arkajudak is used colloquially by Cambions oftentimes to refer to certain decently powerful Ajudak as well, such as the likes of Dwydalze related Zuyodul.

Voyoronon

Named after the Underworld and oftentimes called Infernians, Voyoronon are related to Urgazunon and are believed to be their descendants. Although they are traditionally not as Eldritch-like as their kin, Voyoronon oftentimes feature unusual traits such as multiple sets of eyes or limbs. Due to their unusually high quantities of death essence for a living race, however, they oftentimes have features almost akin to that of the Undead— some are skeletal, sinewy, or gaunt. Voyoronon oftentimes have large crests of horns and patches of hard, scale-like protrusions on portions of their body and tufts of fur. They are often digitigrade, featuring talons, claws, or hooves for feet, are sometimes winged, and their hands are covered in large claws. Their skin and hair are traditionally colourful, taking on hues of emeralds, indigos, crimsons, violets, and ambers, although they may also come in greyscales as well. They have burning, glowing eyes that come in a wide array of hues, ranging across the rainbow. Voyoronon stand at around seven and a half feet (2.29 metres) to nine feet tall (2.74 metres). Voyoronon have a natural talent for Rogus Vitalus and, due to their generally quite capable physique, are talented combatants and mages alike, a fact that Voyoronon have widely embraced due to a somewhat militaristic culture and identity. They are oftentimes considered quite prideful in their capabilities and revere the Underworld and the various Gods of Death, believing it to be the origin of their powers. They are traditionally rather emblematic of the magics they have access to, with them oftentimes warping their personalities quite drastically— they are also users of Elementum Creo, particularly Ignis or Glaicies depending on the region they hail from; Sacrum Deum Defantatus; Viscus Insero, although they are generally quite limited at it; and, quite rarely, may take on traces of Vis Stellae Inane from their Urgazunon relatives. Voyoronon are especially known for their capabilities in casting Pestis and Letum based spells, which they often imbue into their other abilities, enabling them to inflict damage over time to their opponents, as well as a particularly striking curse oftentimes cast by their people that cause excruciating pain, making the affected feel as if their body was rotting.

Rzaudaus

Rzaudaus, otherwise known as Helbeasts, are notably bestial Arkajudak with an innate tie to the magics of the Underworld— hence, the reference to 'Hel' in their common name, the Ordholdt and Jotuun word for the Underworld. Rzaudaus vary in degrees of bestial features, with some being akin to small Kaiju due to being quadrupedal whereas others are more akin to a Beastkin. They generally feature horned crests, like their other Cambion kin, however, due to many of them having a wide array of features, Rzaudaus are difficult to describe cohesively. Most, however, are described distinctly as canid, bovid, or caprine, and the bulk of their body is covered in fur, carapace, or scales, their face is elongated into a muzzle, their legs are digitigrade, and their hands and feet are more like claws than traditional humanoid digits. Rzaudaus are traditionally wingless although they often have bright, colourful, glowing eyes. Portions of their body may have elemental or plantoid features, although this is generally rare. Rzaudaus are generally rather tall, standing at around nine and a half feet (2.90 metres) to eight feet tall (2.44 metres), although many are prone to having slightly hunched over backs if they are bipedal. Rzaudaus are notably territorial and protective over their lands and many live in large groups, traditionally composed of relatives, otherwise known as Eitzrudi. These clans tend to be more focused on themselves, rather than the caste structures of their ilk. Rzaudaus are rather social by nature and oftentimes struggle with isolation for too long. Rzaudaus have an innate talent for Natura Animi and Elementum Creo, with Rzaudaus and their Sudyxos brethren featuring the most access to unique forms of Elementum Creo, as they often have an innate talent for the magic as a whole, not simply Ignis or Glaicies like their kin, and, once they develop a specialisation into a form, are quite talented at varieties not traditionally used by Cambions, although most notoriously use Ignis, hence the term, 'Helfire.' Rzaudaus, in particular, however, are known for imbuing their other spells with Rogus Vitalus, enabling them to dampen and sap the life essence of others and inflict necrotic damage with their elemental attacks. They are also decently talented shapeshifters, however, it is predominantly in taking the form of beasts rather than proper humanoids.

Shinaviraak

Considered the primary ancestors of the Ubi people, Shinaviraak are rather humanoid for Arkajudak— although their hands traditionally end in claws and much of their bodies are covered in spines and scale-like protrusions, they possess a relatively humanoid body structure, although many have digitigrade, hooved legs. They always have at least four arms, with many having as many as eight, and they generally possess large tails, with the length of the tail being supposedly indicative of their physical prowess, and thus a desired trait. Shinaviraak generally have crimson, amber, emerald, indigo, or violet skin and hair, although these features can be greyscale instead. They feature crests of horns; burning, glowing eyes; and may have delicate, glowing markings across their bodies. Shinaviraak stand at anywhere from eight (2.44 metres) to eleven feet tall (3.35 metres), making them the tallest out of the Arkajudak, although they are usually lither and leaner. The bulk of Shinaviraak are feminine in nature, as their culture idealises feminine beauty, although many are, instead, a third sex between what would traditionally be called male or female. They particularly idealize the act of warfare and are quite combative— they oftentimes ascend through their rankings via trial by combat and they practice utilising multiple weapons at once from a young age. Shinaviraak are talented shapeshifters and illusionists who utilise Viscus Insero and Umbra et Lux to enable them to transform into a wide array of humanoid forms. This Viscus Insero extends into a minor regenerative factor, although Shinaviraak are not particularly excellent at regenerating anything other than their many limbs. They are talented runesmiths, utilising Viva Caelatura with excellent prowess and are known for their usage of Imperium Mentis in tandem with Rogus Vitalus and Viva Caelatura to disrupt the spellcasting of their opponents with terrible migraines and mana sapping.

Dwydalze

Frequently called 'Destinare,' a phrase supposedly translating to 'to destine,' the origin of the name of this particular category of Cambion is claimed to have from a phrase uttered by Ireakh long ago, although it has long been lost to history. Dwydalze are the de facto leaders of Cambion society and are deeply respected for their sheer power— the only Cambions to be regarded as superior are the Proto-Cambions, although there are few in number. Like the Celestials, Dwydalze's ancient-most ancestors are generally descended from Nephi and Dwydalze Cambions generally possess the least diluted blood out of all modern Cambions— they are quite closely related to the ancient Praza-Kwualnin who were created by Nephi and eventually interbred with their race's makers. All Dwydalze have their own distinctive magical affinities, however, most of them are considered widely versatile— in spite of most oftentimes having access to a multitude of magics, however, most individual Dwydalze generally specialise in only a few types of magic. Dwydalze are generally larger than other Cambions and possess a unique, oftentimes somewhat inhumanoid form, however, all possess the ability to shapeshift into more traditional Cambion forms instead, usually being roughly on par with a Kjir in size. Dwydalze are the only Cambions besides Proto-Cambions to possess the unique ability to utilise Luna.

Urgazunon

Translating roughly as 'Abyssian,' these powerful Cambions are said to be the ancestors of the bulk of the Voyoronon alive today and are said to have produced by and intermixed with the Nephi of the Lower Depths. Intimidating with notable muscularity and gruff by nature, most find Urgazunon to be rather daunting, regardless of whether or not they are allies or foes. Urgazunon are unusual for their ability to have access to Inane or, quite rarely, Stella. They oftentimes have an innate potential for a wide array of magics, including Imperium Mentis, Viva Caelatura, Rogus Vitalus, and Viscus Insero beyond Luna, although utilising too many forms of mana oftentimes dilute their strongest magic. Physically and magically potent, Urgazunon are threatening to face and their militaristic values encourage training in combat from a young age— they are, however, the slowest of the Dwydalze. Urgazunon usually possess the ability to blend their Luna magic with other forms of magic— particularly, Vis Stellae, Viscus Insero, or Rogus Vitalus. Although others oftentimes specialise in this practice, Urgazunon can perform this with a wide array of magics, although many of these hybridisations have diluted potency from those who might specialise in such a practice, like Erelim, even if Urgazunon can utilise more magic types. Generally classified as somewhat Eldritch-like, Urgazunon are known for their rather distinctive, unusual features— a multitude of eyes, several limbs, tendrils, minor bestial attributes, grotesque or otherwordly attributes, and all sorts of other traits depending on their heritage. Their true forms are immense, standing between twenty feet tall (6.10 metres) once they reach or surpass their five thousandth year, but most stay comfortably between twelve feet tall (3.66 metres) to fifteen feet tall (4.57 metres), especially whilst within their humanoid forms; they are also described as bizarre, albeit not particularly incomprehensible.
