Alnabi

From Beyond the Veil

History

A land with a rich and vibrant culture and a devotion to the Gods above, Alnabi has a long, mottled history of conflict— initially being part of the most inhospitable reaches of territory in the nation of Nuralahib, Alnabi was known as Aradalsham in its earliest years. Nuralahib was one of the first nations within the land of Asla'nir— like many others, it was conquered and merged into one nation splintered into city-states many times over the course of its history, but it was mostly known for its Nephi presence— much of the world of Asla'nir was filled with mortals or natural forces, but Nuralahib had a predominantly Celestial population, with a surprising amount of Nephi within its borders. Many small empires laid within the continent of Aaliya Bara, especially as mortals ventured out from the strongholds of the Gods and sought to create their own territories. The Gods began to be drawn away from Asla'nir more and more and the nations they ruled over began to destabilise— Nuralahib's power and control over Aaliya Bara dwindled over time, splintering into many regions that would later develop into tiny nations.

Although Tyrea's reign in Nuralahib was fair and just, the region that would later become Alnabi was prone to infighting and whilst many worshipped Tyrea, their predominant faiths laid elsewhere and the religious institution that kept the Goddess in power featured Adonius's followers as well, those who had been mercifully and begrudgingly taken in by the Goddess of Law after they sought refuge from Isigkir. The consistent wars between clans and city-states in Aradalsham caught the attention of a few of the Gods, with one of them being the War Goddess Arikar, who, invested in their conflict, asked for Queen Tyrea to enable her to stabilise the region and allow it to develop into its own nation. With her blessing, the Goddess of Strategy changed the course of conflicts, and with the help of her lover, caused the inevitable splintering of Nuralahib into a variety of smaller, albeit organised states. Of these states, Alnabi was one of its numbers.

After so much warfare, the nations of Aradalsham had dwindling populations, but at Ki's behest, his most devout followers came to the land and, seeing beauty in the desolate landscape given it was reminiscent of Isigkir, a hot desert at the time, some settled down. These became the first Jinn over time and their people were 'blessed' with the haphazard, chaotic mystical might of the Deity Iro. In time, as Adonius's followers began to become corrupted by their God's twisted words, their minds altered by N'ghora, some disgruntled individuals ended up settling in Aradalsham as well— these Proto-Celestials were powerful figures and their descendants oftentimes devoted their lives to serving the people of Aradalsham, but much of the mottled nature of Alnabi's population is the result of natives beyond these two races— the Beastfolk and Kaiju of the Sphinxian Empire, which laid on the border of what would later become Tiryt and Alnabi in the modern day, the descendants of the remnants Regulus of Aaliya Bara and the Primordials, Fae, Draconians that naturally resided within the region.

Ki established a new dynasty in Alnabi before his inevitable departure: the Sultana Ain'ahna Ayaarsahm was a prosperous ruler of Alnabi and beloved by the people. She was a powerful leader and although she reigned over seven megaannum ago, her name remains in the history books detailing her as one of the greatest rulers in all of Alnabi's history. Through diplomacy, she and her descendants expanded the tiny nation's borders bit by bit, but eventually, her dynasty came to an end with her great-great-great-granddaughter, who was eventually usurped and overthrown due to her weaker leadership. In the face of conflict, she allowed her people to lose too much, her preference for pacifism resulting in the loss of territory and suffering amongst those who were closest to Alnabi's militaristic neighbours. Over time, many dynasties have taken the throne through various methods, but the instalment of militarism in Alnabi began its roots in that moment and expanded a thousandfold over the past several million years. Alnabi took control of neighbouring nations who lay alongside the borders of Tiryt quite easily when Sanctuary rose and their nations were split in two. Eventually, the entire territory of Aradalsham was conquered and many of those who were captured during war became slaves, with their descendants fueling the slave economy to this day.

Over time, although Arikar and Ki were dominant faiths for many, many years, a militaristic organisation known as the Ascendancy, or, in Altyr, Alsha'muhar formed predominantly from the Kinyokarian sect Alshaak'mir, but partially from Arikar and Ki's faiths became a dominant faction in the grand scheme of Alnabi's history. Its religious values were heavily instilled in the people and it relied on playing towards the desires of the population quite well— these three faiths dominated Alnabi for good reason, after all. From the militaristic, strategic minds of the warriors who chanted in Arikar's name to the farmers who believed that Kinyokar blessed their crops to the adherents of Ki who appealed to families, lovers, and the general populace, the Ascendancy appealed to the people of Alnabi deeply. It promised a land of love and freedom, of fertility and prosperity, but only if Alnabi had the military power to protect itself from rivaling nations. Its practices were taught in schools, its members became part of the theocracy of Alnabi, and in time, the Ascendancy had almost complete power over Alnabian's daily routines, lives and ways of thinking.

The last great padishah before the current padishah was a man by the name of Ahmen'amir Alzharan— although he ruled predominantly ten thousand years ago, his reign came to an end roughly seven and a half thousand years ago. He was compassionate, powerful, and had a commanding presence unlike any other. His reign was said to be blessed by the Gods, for he was one of many padishahs that encouraged innovation and the rich, artistic and diverse culture of Alnabi. His son that followed him was seen as lesser, but still reflected his father— Sultan Alvanar Alzharan was cruel and prone to unusual punishments. He believed that slavery in Alnabi was crucial to its economy and set into stone many laws that reinforced the suffering and lengthened the duration of slavery, particularly for those born into slavery or those taken into slavery unwillingly. His only daughter was sweet, but not particularly cut out for the throne. His sons were greedy and power-hungry and when their father died, they rallied opposing factions amongst the Alnabian people and drew it into its worst civil war in hundreds of thousands of years. Their sister was slain by one of them under the belief that she was a threat to his power over the throne and this angered the Alnabian people, especially after dozens of years of conflict that rocked the nation's economy and agricultural stability.

Their saviour came in the form of a major figurehead within the Ascendancy who was seen as blessed by the Gods to begin with and seen as a hand of the Gods after her involvement in Alnabian history. Descended from a long line of guardians of the throne of Alnabi, the future Sultana tired of the Civil War and what it had done to the Alnabian people. Rallying the more militaristic aspect of the Ascendancy and freeing a few select, powerful slaves kept by the royal family, she managed to bring a halt to the civil war, her followers slaying the brothers and those who continued to fight for them, even knowing what they had done to their people. The famines that wrought Alnabi from the burning of farms was difficult to solve, but eventually, the Sultana found solutions by communicating with the natural races of Alnabi, the Primordials and Fae who had fled to the outskirts or resided in the most dangerous reaches of Alnabi, and the most devout followers of the God of Fertility. With their help, Alnabi's agriculture was once again booming and for roughly the past hundred years, the Sultana has maintained power as an idolised religious figure.

Alnabi, in its new, fragile state, quickly reinforced its military and returned itself to a vague sense of its former glory, but some remain hesitant to accept a new padishah on the throne after the pain and suffering caused by the children of Sultan Alvanar. The Ascendancy, although a powerful force, is now the dominant political party and any sort of reluctance to accept their new reign has been stifled through carefully weeding out those who would speak up against them and through propaganda. With Aaliya Bara merging as one once more, resulting in Tiryt and Alnabi becoming neighbours once again, Alnabi has reached out to Tiryt, their neighbouring nation that has found itself in a similar position— a power vacuum resulting in the takeover of a religious force. Barasaire was easily allied with as well, but only after Alnabi took in refugees from the trade hub Sairekli, which sunk due to the immense global disturbance of the continents returning back to their original location. Alnabi has obtained two considerably powerful allies, but the most considerable and useful thing garnered by these refugees is an expanded trade economy and newfound citizens of expertise in the realm of naval warfare and the craftmanship of boats. Alnabi has reached the beginning of a new age: one of militaristic power, an expanding economy, and a religious and artistic renaissance unlike any other— whether or not this has rendered them a major world power has yet to be seen.

Societal Structure

Common Perspectives, Customs, and Attitudes

Alnabi has a blend of various cultures and customs depending on the particular region that one originates from— even within a given race, different subsections of Alnabi have documented differences in artistic expression, which is one of the dominant and keystone features of Alnabian culture. There are over seventy different 'ethnic groups' noted within Alnabi, ignoring its many individual peoples that further divide them, and thus Alnabi is a rather diverse empire that predominantly organises itself via a millet system, enabling localised communities to lead themselves rather than purely dedicating it to the Sultana and her delegates. Various ethnic groups have historically been nomadic or sedentary, with some wandering eternally across its sands, although argiculture is a crucial component of Alnabian society as well. Alnabians hail back from many lineages of communities who believe themselves to be blessed by one of the many Gods of Asla'nir and reasonably so— the nation has been host to many notable Gods throughout its history who had a fondness for the region— and thus, faith is a dominant presence amongst the peoples of Alnabi, one which is key to many of their daily life. Due to Alnabi's history of serving as a romping ground for various Gods, different groups have different opinions on different topics, however, some are fairly consistent— Ki, in particular, is such a popular God that Alnabians generally distinctly have an open acceptance and understanding of love and sexuality, with the theme having long since dominated its expression of art and self and polyamory being decently commonplace. Arikar's uplifting and stabilization of the region enforces a respect for combat and the Alsha'mushar's militaristic leanings have instilled a sense of a honourable warrior-based culture into parts of Alnabi, especially the original region before its expansion into its modern day empire.

Beyond serving as warriors, however, Alnabians are artists and artisans, first and foremost. Studious and intrigued by the world around them, Alnabi has historically been a centre of literature, prose, storytelling, and theatre— the art of shadow-telling and various forms of oral storytelling have been passed down throughout Alnabi's long, extensive history. Dance and music are emphasized as powerful methods of expression, especially within the Raseelani region, where numerous styles of dance, many of which express local mythologies and folk tales, have been noted. Alnabi has been a centre of trade for many years, with many wares being common crafts from the Alnabian people, particularly mystical ones and specialised crafts, such as textile arts, jewelry, and mystical productions, like scrolls, tomes, and enchanted goods. These particular creations are oftentimes interwoven with the Alnabian peoples' heritage— beyond methodology, the long-standing production of these items has become a unique form of artistry that differs from region to region. It is not uncommon for those who can afford it to don cloth with complex patterns, which they oftentimes wreath themselves in, covering much of their body with embroidered fabrics, as it is considered a sign of modesty and humility to keep oneself covered, beyond its advantage in blocking the harsh sun. Alnabi's openness to trade extends beyond such creations as well— Alnabians are generally open-minded towards outsiders and although they have had many enemies throughout time, they will always enjoy a traveller, especially one that has a good tale. Despite this, there are some who are hesitant to welcome outsiders to their lands— Alnabi is the neighbour of rather hostile nations who do not appreciate Alnabi's seeming welcoming nature and her peoples are aware of this fact, with elder generations being even more wary than the youth.
